Iowa Ranks 30th nationally in population; however . . . .

      Iowa ranks:

  • 2nd nationally in the number of girls who play golf
  • 7th nationally in the number of girls who play softball
  • 9th nationally in the number of girls who play volleyball
  • 10th nationally in the number of girls who play basketball
  • 16th nationally in the number of girls participate in track
  • 19th nationally in the number of girls who play tennis

 

According to the National Department of Health & Human Services, students who participate

in activities are--

  • 35% less likely to smoke after high school
  • 49% less likely to use drugs
  • 37% less likely to become a teen parent
  • 27% less likely to be arrested through age 30

 

Other Statistics:

The average GPA of a student who participates in activies is 2.93; the average GPA of a student

who does not participate is 2.04.

The average GPA of a student who participates in one activity is 2.53; the average GPA of of a student who participates in four activities is 3.34.

Non-participants miss twice the number of school days per year as do participants.

When in season, participants miss an average of less than one day of school.

Dropout rates of non-participants are 15 times as high as participants.

The average 16-year-old spends 10 minutes a day with mom & dad; she spends 50 minutes per class

per teacher; BUT . . . . she spends 2 hours with a coach in practice each day.  She is willing to learn

and wants to participate.  Our coaches have a great opportunity to influence students, and we should

help them in any way we can.
